Written for readers who have finished Book 1.
Rev. Marcus Hale pastors a small, poor church across the river from Beacon, and Erin is sent over with a brief that calls him a holdout. He is nothing like the brief: a big, stooped man in his seventies in a cardigan, with a bad knee and a laugh that comes out of him surprisingly easily. He is not a polished speaker. He preaches from a music stand, loses his thread and finds it again, and is a little vain about the things his church refuses to do. He also reads Erin the way she reads footage, and after the service he asks her one quiet question she has no answer for: what's framed out of your shot, child?
