Written for readers who have finished Book 1.
Erin Brandt is twenty-nine and the broadcast and media director at Beacon Church, a megachurch in the Virginia suburbs of the capital. She directs her father's national livestream from a booth above the sanctuary, eight camera feeds laid out in front of her like a hand of cards, and she can hear the congregation's swell coming two bars before it arrives. She fell asleep under the sound desk as a child, back when the whole church fitted into an old carpet showroom, and she has never wanted any other work. Then her grandfather dies, and in his garage she finds a crate of brittle radio recordings made ninety years ago by a great-grandfather the family never mentions, the most gifted broadcast engineer she has ever heard. She sets out to restore his voice, one careful pass at a time.
