The Endurance

Hale's Riverside Church (the holdout)

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

Rev. Hale's church sits across the river from Beacon, with the towers of the capital pale on the far bank. The roof leaks, and a white five-gallon bucket stands in the centre aisle catching the drip; the congregation has built the morning around it. The room is fuller than anyone at Beacon expected, with mismatched chairs set out for the overflow, and the crowd is impossible to cast: old men in worn jackets, young families, a girl translating for her grandmother, two men off the street handed coffee and a seat. There is an upright piano that has seen better decades, and a folding table of bread and tins with no line in front of it, only a card: You don't have to be anybody.
