The Endurance

Beacon Church

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

Beacon Church is a megachurch in the Virginia suburbs of the capital: ten thousand seats, three services every Sunday, and a livestream reaching more than a million households through partner networks, an app and two satellite carriers. It began in a converted carpet showroom with forty people on folding chairs. Now its lobby is pale marble, the coffee is free, and the cross over the doors is lit to look steady rather than severe. Three years ago, on the Sunday after a contested national day split the country, its founder stood up in his shirtsleeves and told his people they had not become afraid. Beacon grew by forty per cent the next year, and it has felt like a blessing ever since.
